Court of Appeals Upholds Dismissal of Malicious Prosecution Suit Against Greenberg Traurig

As featured on the front page of the Daily Business Review, the Third District Court of Appeals upheld Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Marc Schumacher's decision in 2011 to dismiss a malicious prosecution lawsuit that had been filed against the law firm of Greenberg Traurig.

Paul Schwiep, who represented Greenberg Traurig both in the trial court and on appeal, was quoted by the Daily Business review stating, "The lawsuit was meritless. Greenberg well represented its client, and it should never have been sued."

Susan Raffanello Presents to the Association of Corporate Counsel

Susan Raffanello participated in the Association of Corporate Counsel South Florida Chapter’s Fourth Annual CLE Conference as a speaker earlier this month.  Mrs. Raffanello spoke on the topic of “Stop the Email Madness; Or At Least Minimize Its Harm,” discussing the dangers in the failure to have and adhere to email protocols within the workplace, the implications that email has on the statute of frauds, and what every company must know about the electronic discovery rules.

 

Dan Blonsky Wins Federal Employment Discrimination Trial

Congratulations to Partner Dan Blonsky who obtained a complete defense verdict on behalf of a Fortune 500 company in a federal employment discrimination and retaliation trial in front of Judge William P. Dimitrouleas in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The Court found, after a three day trial, that "(1) Plaintiff was not discriminated against based upon his race, religion or national origin; and (2) Plaintiff was not retaliated against for filing the EEOC charges or the instant lawsuit."  

Kendall Coffey Leads Defense Team in Legal Malpractice Trial to a Complete Defense Verdict

As featured in the front page of the Miami Daily Busines Review, Founding Partner Kendall Coffey obtained a complete defense verdict on behalf of the law firm of Shutts & Bowen, which was defending a multi-million dollar legal malpractice suit.  Mr. Coffey led the trial team in the marathon trial, which included a five-week interruption.  Still, the Miami-Dade County jury entered a complete defense verdict, awarding the plaintiff $0.  Shutts & Bowen stated after the trial that it was "pleased that the jury's verdict represents a complete vindication of our work and our tradition of professionalism."

Bob Burlington and Dan Blonsky Named to Legal Elite Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Robert Burlington and Daniel Blonsky who were named to the Legal Elite Hall of Fame. According to Legal Elite, "The 28 inductees named to the Hall of Fame this year have achieved the special distinction of being named to Legal Elite every year for the past 10 years." 

10 Coffey Burlington Lawyers Named to Super Lawyers List

Congrats to the Coffey Burlington lawyers who were named in the Florida 2013 edition of Super Lawyers magazine. Kendall Coffey, Bob Burlington, Dan Blonsky, Ben Brodsky, Albert Caruana, Jeff Crockett, David Freedman, Gabe Groisman, Kevin Kaplan and Paul Schwiep were all named Super Lawyers. Bob Burlington, Dan Blonsky and Kendall Coffey were also named amongst the Top 100 Lawyers in Miami.

A special congratulations to Kendall Coffey who was also named one of the Top 100 Lawyers in Florida.

Andrew H. Marks Joins the Firm as a Partner

Coffey Burlington is excited to welcome Andy Marks as a partner with the firm.  Mr. Marks comes to the firm after more than 25 years as a litigation partner in the Washington, D.C. firm of Crowell & Moring LLP.  Mr. Marks has extensive experience both as a trial lawyer, appellate advocate, and counselor in a wide range of practice areas, including hotel management disputes, business fraud, breach of fiduciary duty and corporate governance, class actions, real estate, insurance coverage, and electronic discovery.  He also has represented media clients on libel and other issues and handled numerous civil rights cases.  In addition, Mr. Marks has substantial experience, and a strong record of success, both as a mediator and an arbitrator.
